Search the catalogue ↓

Browse named entries from historical surveys, archaeological registers and official damage assessments. These are source records, not a count of unique destroyed temples. Several entries may concern the same place; one entry may describe a group. Each preserves its source and the work still needed.

How to read this catalogue

Official assessments describe reported physical damage. Archaeological remains often have no known loss date or destroyer. Historical compilations include claims about later buildings and reused material; those claims await independent checks. Dates on later monuments are not treated as temple destruction dates. Earthquake losses remain separate from intentional acts.

Nepal Department of Archaeology: damage list, 30 July 2015 · 156 records

Annex 8, PDF pages 82–84 of the joint monitoring mission report (published 2016): 155 numbered entries plus an unnumbered Mahadev entry. The PDF text layer was checked to correct misaligned scraped rows. Palaces and support structures remain context, not temples. Condition is the July 2015 assessment, not the current condition. Individual identities, duplicate components and locations still require review.

Richard M. Eaton: Instances of Temple Desecration, Frontline, 22 December 2000 · 80 records

Eighty selected episodes, not eighty unique temples and not a total for all history. Several rows identify towns or regions rather than named buildings. Attribution is Eaton’s; underlying numbered works are a separate follow-up task. Source-era geographic labels and disputed dates are retained. PDF text extraction was corrected using the original table layout.
